Audio Junk back at the end of the 70s included all of the classic equipment with tubes! Leak stereo amps could be picked up for UK£50.00, I bought a virtually new radford STA15 + SPA22 for less than that along with a Garrard 301 TT + SME 12" + Ortofon SPUGt/e @ £15.00. These pieces now sell for small fortunes. And - in good condition, correctly set-up and using decent speakers - would give a new "Audiophile" system costing $50,000 a good run for its money.
There is no reason why a non auto record player should cost a fortune, they are the most simplistic of mechanisms. The old Jukeboxes were a different story. The Connoisseur BD1 was nice and cheap and simple and gave good results...

I used one of these when I was a kid as a guitar amp it overdrove(?) beautifully! I didn't know what it was or what I was doing and nobody stopped me. Hahahahaha....I'm crying now though....
Western Electric , Klang-Film , old Goodmans for example was the " golden age " stop at the 60´s , half 70's.
Today modern time is great for DIY.
Those monsters all turned out to be earbud...
