Even at an early age, I was fascinated by Less Paul.....his music and all the technology (after seeing them on TV) even though it was way beyond my 5 year old brain at that point.

I can offer no Chilled wood?
I loved the start of this programme as a kid, much better than the show, like so much 70's/80's TV.
Being greedy (so much to choose from) remember this intro?:

Even at an early age, I was fascinated by Less Paul.....his music and all the technology..
I too was a fan of Les and his innovations. I'll never forget the trip I made to his home in Mahwah NJ sometime in the late eighties. I was with a friend who was working for Bruel & Kjaer when they had a field office in West Caldwell. We were supposed to see someone named Paul about some B&K equipment he was selling. I asked Paul who? Just Paul was the reply. Later, a left turn off Rt. 202 north, down a road and into a driveway to park in the rear of a big house. Entering the rear door, I was shocked to see the cutting lathe which I recognized from the gatefold pictures in the album "Les Paul Now" So "just Paul" was actually Les Paul! And there he was, standing at the top of a short stairs.

I was somewhat captivated to learn it was him, never having met him before, I did a little nervous sucking up and complimenting his work. Apparently it paid off because we got the cooks tour of the place including the trophy room and the recording studio. Gold records and awards hanging on the walls along with a huge copy of the cover of an old Radio Electronics magazine with him sitting on the studio control panel opened to expose it's innards. I have that magazine somewhere.

But the studio control room was my nirvana. I actually stood right there in front of the "Monster" (control panel) and the "Octopus" (8 track recorder). I love the old Ampex machines and still own several of them including a 351 I built from scratch years ago when I couldn't afford to buy even a used one. The table and chairs weren't there, and it seemed a little smaller then the picture presents it, but wow. Two of the Ampex 300 machines on the right had an HP 202A oscillator and an Ampex 275 power amplifier mounted in the front (belly) in place of the decorative covers. These were used to control the capstan's motor speed as heard on the song "Lover" which actually slowed down and then sped up again.

Les was gracious and friendly and I consider myself fortunate to have been a guest in his home for that hour or so.
