You may want to check out the Shiva woofers at Avatar Audio. Their white paper is a good introduction and provides a lot of design options. I'd recommend, for a rookie, sticking with closed-box systems; tuning ported and PR systems without the use of good quality impedance measuring equipment and a firm handle on what you're doing is dicey at best.
And use built-in plate amps. For this frequency range, you don't need anything fancy, just lots of power and reasonably low distortion.
