I am toying with the idea of building a speaker similar to the Madisound Recession Buster Reference. Unfortunately, the kit is no longer available, so I'd need to buy components.
Here is the crossover (Thanks to Jed for sending me this!)

I understand circuit diagrams well, but am new to speaker design. What the heck is the "generator"? Is this simply the signal from my amplifier/receiver/other source? Is this a component I never heard of? Does this speaker need a $50,000 machine that runs on kerosene and provides enough power for a small commercial building?

If that's for a shunt you should connect terminals to each other.Thanks. Does this mean I can ignore these small circles and their numbers?
(note: more like 7 and 7, not + and - of course.)

However, in your example, node 3 is the positive speaker terminal, R4 and L3.
Much easier to see if you understand there will be a number where ever components attach to each other.
