Well, they are done.

Got the rubber feet installed, just peel and stick

These things are nice, the speakers just float on cushy rubber cloud of dampening. I'll be using these pads more often.

Also did a quick demo of the horn installed, remember this is a cast aluminum horn but with the dampening it is very non resonant, the echo you hear in the video is the room.

Ok, now for some fun!

Gotta ship these Strafi out to Ohio by Thursday, this is stressing me out more than a little as Fedex loses packages all the time, not to mention damage. Shipping here and back not including any insurance will be a reasonable $300 (that's my rates, about half off retail), then I need to gamble with how much I insure them for.

So I'm making a shipping crate, key is make it stronger and more protective than cardboard but not weight too much. Construction is using "1/2 inch" plywood, 3/8" plywood and some 7/8" thick pallet wood.

I started from the bottom

End caps on, things go quick with a nail gun

And some lids that screw on

Now I couldn't just stop there, speakers of this caliber need a specific form of transportation!

That is a hand rubbed imperial red stain finish on the sides, the top features Colonial maple stain with a black semi gloss enamel accompaniment.

Hand cut artisan stencils create the lettering and stagger from black full bleed to elegant negative relief showcasing the pine hand stained finish below.

Reclaimed pine pallet wood from pre-suffrage era Chicago tells a story that echoes through the ages. Hand crafted transportation art like this isn't just made, it is forged in the suffering and triumph of every human story that came before it!

So after cutting, gluing and nailing a bunch of wood together, I should be good to go =).

My friend Brian asked if the kids painted it...thanks a lot Brian! @bcodemz

And this is the final nearfield response, I left them about .5-1db hot on axis so they sound just right with no toe in, I'm very happy with how they sound, I've been comparing them to all the other speakers I have here the last few weeks and nothing comes close in detail, speed and impact...and boy can they get loud effortlessly! I'll post the XO schematic soon

Thanks!

Got some new inductors and got everything back in tip top shape, upgraded to some much heavier zip ties with a higher tensile rating.

Got them back in the listening room and enjoyed them for a few hours last night, they really like the power from the Adcom GFA-555 as well.

My future plans for these - is to convert them to fully active, possibly make them switchable between passive and active, and build a subwoofer to go with them. I have a FaitalPro 18XL1800 subwoofer coming that I will likely use, enclosure construction will be the same as the Strafi towers and the set will be matching.

So that's the plan currently, only foiled by the fact that we'll be moving into a new home in about 6 weeks, so the sub will be a Fall project.

Thanks!
