speaker sounds better with polarity switched?...

With low SPL and ears close to speaker, I guess room modes have almost no effect in judging the quality of the bass.

But you haven't confirmed if what you did was to switch the absolute phase, meaning that you didn't just switch polarity in one channel but both left and right channels. Sorry but everything must be clear :D
