Hey guys. I was wondering if you guys could help me make a decision. Originally I was looking for a small cheap sub. First I thought about getting an 8” sub from Apexjr but people suggested a Dayton instead. Then it snow balled. I looked up a 8” Dayton it was $23 from parts express and according the box design it needed a 11”x11”11” box. Then I looked at the Dayton 10” it was around $7 more but the box is a little bigger than I like, 18”x18”18. But I’m greedy and I would sacrifice size for more cheap bass. Then for %^&*s and giggles I looked up the 12” which requires the same size box as the 10” and about $17 more. I guess my question is that how much more powerful is an 8” compared to a 12”. Also has anyone used these subs before are they any good? I guess my main concern is that I don’t want to miss out on a world of difference for a mere 20 bucks. Thanks for any help.

I havn't used any of them, I have an Adire Shiva, but heres my little analysis:

Well first off theres how low the sub will go. The 12 will go lower than the 10 which will go lower than the 8. But as far as volume goes, check out the sensitivities of the subs, which are rated at 94.0, 92.7, 89 dB 2.83V/1m for 12, 10, and 8 respectively. Keep in mind a 3 dB increase is twice as loud. It also depends on what you are driving it with, as the power ratings are 120W, 80W, 80W rms for the three subs. Get WinISD or some other program and model the three subs in the boxes that you will build them in. It will give you plots showing sensitivity vs freq, so you can compare how low the subs will go, and their relative volumes for a given amount of power.

All else equal, the 12" should make 2x the bass of the 8". In this case, all else is not equal, the 12" also has a bit more xmax, so it will be even more. I think you should get the 12", you will regret it a few months from now if you don't its a lot easier to spend the extra $20 now than to build a whole new sub.

Also, be sure to take Moose's advice and do the modelling!

I want to correct Moose that 3 dB isn't twice as loud, 10 dB is twice as loud. But to get 3 dB you need to have two times more power.

So, the 8" will need almost 4 times the power of the 12" to be as loud. The 12" will be louder (40% louder rough estimate) and go deeper.

If you don't mind to spend the extra 20$, do it. A bigger box for sure, but the performance will come with it.

Have you thought about getting the DVC (Note: Not DVC Series) You get more bang for buck outta your amp with em', plus you'll have PRs you can play around with (that match perfectly) if you so wish to. Also, it's 6dBs for double your volume, and 3dBs for a noticible difference.
Here's the DVC 8" I'm planning to use in a sub project

good luck and have fun,

I had that one in mind too. What size box are you planning to use?

I wish I had time to learn how to use all the neat software. I have way too much school to deal with. I am sneaking home this weekend and taking advantage of the power tools. So I am just going to build a box and see how it sounds. I decided Dayton 8" since there really isn’t any room in my dorm room for an 18"X18"18" sub. For the vented design it takes 14"X14"x14" box, i was wondering if could reduce one of the sides by 2 inches and make another longer. I would like to fit the box under my desk.
Thanks for all the replies.

assuming that you will be using a 2 in. port and 3/4 MDF and the 70 watt PE amp...
You can get W 14 x H 14 x D 16 tuned at 30 Hz with a 7.9" port. You'll have a F3 of about 30Hz, I'm no pro but it relatively flat and should work for you. Everything included in the box, drivers amp, so you don't need to add them if that plan is how you would want to go, but...
Try using WINisd beta version, it's easy to use and doesn't take long to figure out. You can plug these specs in and get what you need to get started with it.

I'm no pro, so I'm sure theres better out there, but I hope that's pretty close to what you want, good luck,
