Hi,
Assuming that you have bought 6 micron thick membrane indeed, you could be right that it is not thinner than clingfilm because clingfilm is really thin (but not as strong and durable as Mylar).
You may try some 4 micron. You can feel the difference between 4 and 6 micron and according to several builders hear the difference too.

Mine seems very much the same
I'm pretty sure my mylar is ok after further inspection
If it's Dupont Mylar it is probably 6.3u thick = 25 gauge
Mylar is the Dupont trade name for polyester film. The Dupont Mylar catalog shows:
special order: 2.5u (10 gauge), 3.8u (15 gauge)
standard thickness: 5u (20), 6.3u (25), 8.8 (35), 12u (48) and up
Sound Lab ESL are spec'ed at 2-2.5u Mylar. Mylar supports 4000 volts per mil(0.001")
