The other day I was a bit worried about needle wear, so I decided to get out my old microscope and get some close up shots of the needle's tip. The cartridge is a MM Sure M75 Type D, with a type 10946 needle, I think it's elliptic.
The pictures were taken with my trusty old Nokia 5800 phone, pointed it right down the ocular, macro mode with flash off. Illumination was done with my desk lamp.
As far as I can tell the needle is fine, albeit a bit dirty. Enjoy!

I think it's a parallax error, yes. Took some more pics today to be sure.
The needle is not that old, I bought it some years ago and now it has a couple of hundred hours on it, but it also went through quite some painful adjustment procedures...therefore I was worried it might have some wear and thus damage my precious records.
Anyway, enjoy the pics!

post 1, pic 2
Is that wear we see starting halfway down the tip where the reflection goes from rounded to more of a straight line?
And yes you really ought to brush those aphids off.
Looks OK to me, appears to me to be a conical/spherical stylus but I can't see enough of the profile to really be sure. Kept clean should be good for at least 1K hours worth of use.
