Restoring a Threshold FET 10e - a few questions

Thank you so much! I know that power supply is intended for a power amp.. and I know that it would be considered overkill for sure... but based on GaryB's posts in this thread, as well as (what I perceive to be) similarity between these preamplifiers, I thought if I had to build one I may as well build a nice one (and who knows, maybe someday I could dedicate such a power supply to a Pass power amp... that would be nice!).

Here's a pic I stole from the internet. I can provide more of my actual unit if it helps. But from what I can tell the original power supply for this threshold was remarkably similar in design to the original power supply for the Forte Model 40.

pull your unit and give us well detailed pics of PSU input and local regs, so we can deduce what voltages you need

no use of that sort of overkill

smaller well done PSU is better than Gargantuan not so well done

anyway, first thing is finding what voltages you need, then you can go for MW outboard supply, if that is your wish

:)

I seem to recall +/- 18V, easy enough to replace.

Here is what I have for schematic.

I don't have something out of the box for you, but you are simply looking
at a decent linear regulated +/- 18V.

Here's where I was pulling info from before! But I'll get the preamp out today and have a go at some decent photos. Thank you so much for you help, Zen Mod!!

Here are a few pictures, which I'm sure won't be quite good enough. What specifically can I take better photos of to be of better help?

Zen Mod,

I am incredibly grateful for your help! I do not want to come across as ignorant or unappreciative of your knowledge, and am happy to redirect my focus if you think my interest in going bigger is completely unfounded.

The reason I chose this old post to resurrect instead of making my own is that there is much discussion here, some of which even from yourself (I added a small quote from you earlier on in the thread), regarding upgraded/larger power supplies for the FET 10 variants (which I completely understand I do not own). I am aware of a connection between the Threshold and Forte designs from this time period, but as I'm sure I have demonstrated to you already I am no expert!

Perhaps I am ignorant in my assumption that there is enough similarity between units, or, enough quality in design for my preamplifier to warrant going a bit bigger as described here. I know it is certainly my ignorance that keeps me from knowing whether such a thing could have any potential negative effect, or whether it would simply be an unfruitful venture.

At any rate, I can't thank you enough for your time and help here. Regardless of your direction/response I will be happy to start a separate thread for my project as I could certainly use the extra guidance and reassurance!

all your questions are covered in this thread

replace caps and replace xformer with larger one
don't be a cheapskate ;

buy a boombox if you want to be that

few things (in new thread) are important to find:

-arrangement of PSU connector on back of preamp and wiring of it
-do you know how to make exact separate PSU box, looking at schematic
-do you want that PSU using only for preeamp, or you have some other intentions (I can advise first, why complicating)
-how much you're trusting in claims that overkill xformer is resulting in better sound (I mean - even 10VA is technically enough there; 30-50VA, as I wrote, is already overkill, which is good for sound........ and I did wrote that you can go as big as you want, if that gives you better sleep)

regarding size of xformer - I'm writing my opinion, which is - quality of xformer is more important than size , if size is enough ; but, as always, I'm not standing in way of someone's happiness - if you want xformer bigger than preamp, just do it

been there, done than, was happy little camper :)
