Past experience has indeed shown that a mono prototype in a stereo system is indeed not "right" - on the other hand I am with tubelab: everything double for an eventual failure?
I think I will combine all recommendation gathered in this thread:
For the moment I have a rig with a lot of power supplies, pots and multimeters to build and adjust a PP mono channel (or a stereo SE). This will be used to get a half decent "measured" amplifier (just like artosalo mentioned). Once DC conditions are more or less known, there is less need for turning pots - and assembling a stereo unit should be easier.
Now, do you know the item number "free time" at Mouser?
