AC should be flowing through the 5nf capacitor.
It does, but just a tiny amount flows, since the impedance is high.
The 5nF is over 500k ohm at 60Hz, so around 240uA flows
through it at 120VAC input, when the switch is off.

My Hafler se120 has a .01uf wired the same way. if this capacitor fails the unit can come on?
If the capacitor shorts, the voltage will bypass the switch contacts and reach the transformer.
This is unlikely, since the type of capacitors (X) used for this function are specifically designed
to not short when they fail.
In the old AR turntable, the capacitor across the power switch to prevent pops leaked enough
current that you could feel vibration in the motor pulley. They kept getting letters from customers
wondering if something was wrong.
