Sure, look up tables is a valid method, especially if you only need a degree of accuracy. I really don't know exactly what the options were at the time, but this was early 1980's. ROM wasn't cheap, nor was RAM for sequential iterations. Clock cycles were precious. Bottom line is they didn't actually do trig anyway. They still don't, as it turns out. Phase comparators using real and imaginary phasor components is still implemented.
