Potential EUVL F5X designed case user distribution check

As promised details of the case GB.

If you can recall, we started to design and offer the case at the request of the forum. The initial understanding was that we should supply everything turn-key and over multiple batches as the forum would require.

Business considerations forced us to go back on our promise, and we apologised to Variac and Jason for that. But since we made the promise openly, we discussed amongst ourselves and decided to offer one batch of 25 cases for 2011. We shall review the situation again in 2012. So this one batch will be organised as a Group Buy. The forum did consider running the Group Buy, but decided it was too much work and too few will benefit, especially for the long term. That discussion delayed things somewhat.

We have then made alternative plans and organised a team that runs this as a memebers' group buy. The team is led by johnwmclean, with three regional distributors (pchw, smyslow, and johnwmclean) who will collect money, make bank transfers to us, collect the shipment from customs, and send them on to you. So please contact them directly.

Sending Conrad heat sinks to Mark Lai in Hong Kong for machining is very expensive. Surprisingly sending to the US is much cheaper. So we thought there is little point in doing that just to drill and tap a few holes. We therefore agreed to organise the heatsinks as a supplementary Group Buy. It will be limited to those who subscribed for the case, 1 pair of heatsink each, pre-drilled to suit the case only. John and the distributors have kindly agreed to do the extra work and organise this as well. John will get a set of drawings from us soon, so that he can ask for quotes, shipment costs, etc. for each continent. So you are getting Conrad sinks at cost.

As our motivation for the case was always not profit making but to facilitate the F5X build, and provide some financial support for the forum, we want this to still apply. So the cost we announce here is our actual parts cost, plus 10% (cosmetic reject rate from experience). Cost to you will, on top of that, be bank transfer charges, shipment from Mark to distributor, custom fees and taxes, individual shipment to you, etc. Do bear those extras in mind. In addition, we would like to ask you for a voluntary donation to the forum for 50 USD per case. But I leave that to you to decide whether you want to support the forum's long term existence. The second batch onwards, if any, will definitely not be "charity price". So lucky for the subscribers (and probably those on the reserve list).

The list is now frozen at 25 subscribers and 6 reserves. We'll see how many people will opt out and try to support as many as we can.

The complete set of case parts (without the Conrad heat sinks), will be offered in two options :

1) Blank case, as you would buy from any vendor, with no drilled holes at the back and the cradle for connectors, transformer mountings, etc. People who wants to use the case for single ended F5, e.g. should take this option.

2) F5X case fully finished, identical to the prototype shown, with all holes for connectors, etc pre-drilled, and internal parts to hold the regulator heatsink, PSU cap PCB holders, etc. We think it is better to let you source the regulator heatsink locally or as a Group Buy, as the Fischer sinks we used are quite heavy, and expensive to send to Hong Kong for machining and anodising. Any heatsink that will take 35W per channel and not bigger than 120x134x50mm will do, so you can also source locally. The regulator PCB which sits in the middle of the sink has a size of 30x132mm (per channel).

Both will be test assembled at the factory before being dissembled again and packed for shipment. Mark will be present personally to check for cosmetic quality as well as fit of part (using our pair of CNC drilled heat sinks as dummies).

I shall publish a BoM for each version later.

The net price (to be transferred to Mark Lai with all bank charges pre-paid) will be 320 Euros for option 1, and 360 Euros for option 2. They will both be supplied with the CNC drilled aluminium top plate, and not the laser cut stainless steel with wire mesh as posted. This alone costs 25 Euros extra, but we think it is better solution as gluing a wire mesh to a plate (by you) requires quite some skill, and we do not want you to have poor results. Both will also include all mounting screws for the case parts in 304 SST.

Estimated delivery date not before September 2011. And we would like 50% down payment upfront.

The Conrad heat sinks I estimate to be 100 Euros a pair. But there have been previous GB so you can check there as a reference.

Please confirm your subscription by adding confirmed behind your name, or delete as appropriate.

Hope the arrangements are agreeable to most if not all,
Patrick

PS PCB details will be posted at the F5X thread.

I'll answer these questions for the benefit of all :

> who are the regional distributors

As already stated, pchw for North America, symslow for Europe, johnwmclean for Asia.

> the volume and weight of parts Is not cheap to transport

The cheapest is to ship them in bulk (10 cases together) rather than individually.
We shall get quotes for a few forwarders and then you can decide which one to take.

Worst case is individual parcel by post which will be around 40 Euros per case by surface mail.

Hongkong Post - Postage Rates

But we should come under that.

For reference the 2x SumR transformers for the prototype cost us 124 USD to ship surface mail from Canada to Hong Kong.

> what would be custom tax for 1 pcs of case

Whatever is legally required. I think Europe minimum 19% VAT.
Please contact the regional distributors for details.

> or parts would be send as gift

No. No customs officer would believe they are gifts.

wow , i just did the math and while it looks fantastic , i personally cannot justify that kind of expense at this time .

case option 2 = $520 usd plus shipping

conrad heatsinks = $170 shipped , quote was on 2-27-11

that puts the cost of this case to us americans at over $700 usd .

that doesn't mean that i won't be building this amp .

please remove my name from the list and offer my case to the next in line .

cheers , Woody

Nice class A amplifier cases are unfortunately expensive.

http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/pass-labs/172770-balanced-f5-question-12.html#post2365652

My initial estimates were around 500 Euros including heatsinks but without shipment.
My own cases (machined myself) cost much more than that, material alone.

Maybe you can contact Dave to see if he can offer you something less costly :
