Watch out, this video of Claude Paillard hand-crafting vacuum tubes with a Swiss Army knife and a blowtorch is going to eat up 17 minutes of your life. It’s hypnotizing, like all the best porn. Great soundtrack, too. (Via Slashdot)

I have seen this, but it is fun to rewatch. When I have the super garage and lab setup I'm still dreaming of, I'll give it a whirl.
I have wondered how ghetto you could make it. I've seen people making rectifiers and triodes with old lightbulbs and epoxy. I have always wanted to try to build an guitar amp entire from stuff I find around the house - transformers wound on bolts and capacitors made from kitchen foil or jam jars.
I'd rather watch this than a lot of hollywood porn, it has to be fairly intense for this man

Quite something eh!
I am watching it over and over, and really wish I could share it with some friends who have no internet connection.
Forgive my naivette in these arts, but at which point (min:sec) does the artist evacuate the tube of air? I rather expected the heated parts of the bulb to collapse/suck inwards at the point of heating?, and what kind of vacuum equipment does it take to do that kind of stuff?
