I apologize that I did not read Bernhard's remark as carefully as I should. I am trying to understand the problem he had when atempting to drive a DAC directly from CX23035. Actually, that's exactly what I would like to do.

I already have the TDA1543A's on order. I will try it on both a NEC CDR602 external CDROM and the DCD1500 and post the result. It may take me a while though.

Before I strat modifying, do you know if the CX23035 output in Sony format instead of I2S?

I tried to use a TDA1543A DAC without disconnecting the digital filter SM5801. The result was a sound with a lot of noise. I did not want to cut the connection of SM5801 without first trying to improve the sound with the original PCM54 DAC.

I then decided to disconnect the low quality metal can low pass filters and replace them with a pair of good quality TRW 2.2 uF polypropylene caps. BINGO!!!!! The sound is very very good now. It is amazing how a small change can improve the sound so much. You DCD1500 owners out there, please try it and you will like it.

I further swapped out the NE5532s with OPA627s mounted on Brown Dog adapters running in class A. The sound impoved further (much better resolution than NE5532). I will use this DCD1500 as my main CD player now. I may also add a Kwak Clock later.

BTW, the TDA1543A non-oversampling DAC that I built worked well with the NEC CDROM. It sounded very good, but I like the modified DCD1500 better. I am not sure if it is due to the DAC or transport.
