Hi all,
I was hoping to build a Pete millet engineers amp, and I've just got a quote back on shipping transformers from Edcor to Australia... $160! (USD). Total costing ends up being $420 USD...
Does anyone have either
A) an Australian based source for tube amp transformers (both power and output)
B) An alternate way of shipping from the us to Australia!
I can't be the only person down our way that wants to build a valve amp, so where do folks get their stuff from?

Give Patrick Turner a call, I'm pretty sure his transformers are way better than the Edcor.
hm-m-m, you are the antipod... I'm afraid the current in transformers d go the opposite way as to designed because of upside down orientation of how they were manufactured... you betcha take the trafos apart and re-wind them in opposite direction to make 'em working... just my $0.02
(I guess that's why the shipping is so costy: they d do this for you quickly overnight in UPS facility... and FedEx)

I recently bought Toroidal out put transformers from Poland and Chinese power toroidals
Work very well.
I am sure Patrick Turners transformers are excellent but they are expensive.
I bought Edcors; then they changed their method of shipping and the shipping was a crazy price.
Most Australian makers are very expensive as it is hard to get the cores

Jazbo - thank you, I'd trawled through there and gotten to total pricing and winced quite a bit.
Shef - as I stand on my head here to read your post I detect a degree of ...Cheekiness?
Multi - who's your polish source? I'm wandering through ePay just now for more reasonably priced options, but it's a bit scarce...

I was thinking about this the other day.
I know it could be a little bit of an inconvenience. But i wonder if we organise the odd group buy for trannies
I have decided that over the next couple of years to start winding my own. I used to have time and access to gear. But now i do not.
Of course this all depends on how many guys are keen and what sort of transformers.
I mean i wanted to get started on a tubelab amp. But shipping has killed of c transformers has killed me too.
Evatco stocks hammond transformers at OK prices.
Another option is to try Elson Silva. I do not know which transformers he has in stock at the moment. But i think he was getting bobbins wound to his specs in china
Then putting c-cores on himself. I have contact details for him. PM me for them. I do not know what he is charging. Or maybe i can contact him forst and feel him out. Dude is constantly building amps.

Yes, I think shipping costs for transformers from USA to Australia will be very expensive.
I got all the transformers for my Tubelab SSE from Edcor 5 years ago and the cost of Fedex shipment next door to Canada was $126.00.
I got transformers from Edcor two more times since then and I can say that I'm very pleased with these transformers for the price I paid.
Thanks for the suggestion kevinkr, they're still pretty expensive, and that's before looking at postage.
Damn. I guess it's Edcor after all (although I might query toroidy for postage costs). Just $160 for shipping feels pretty rough...
All right, well, thanks everyone! I guess after this I stick with building solid state stuff.

Hi EmRR,
Yeah, what is going on there? I bought a bunch of small input transformers on eBay at one stage (that never arrived) and the seller had all sorts of issues in sending them/declaring ...Something and so on. I don't think he was a shonky seller; it just seemed rather complicated to get stuff out.
... As for sending a bottle of wine to someone over in your country; Whoa!

Ask EDCOR ship by the sea, but they will refuse do it, so you may order at Ogonowski(Poland) his economic ship is inexpensive; his core is Ei or C core both awg29 or 0,3mm.Hi all,

...At my rate of amp completion, the 'slow boat' would have been perfect timing (as well as price).
That said, Pete was very quick and reasonably priced on shipping out the PCB and parts I ordered from him. Quite the large box for what it contained too. I guess it's all about the weight when it comes to assessing costing.

Thanks fullrangeman. I just sent a query off to Ogonowski on the transformers I'd like. I'll see how I get on.
There must be thousands of suitable transfo's floating around Australia, neglected and abandoned... That said I guess landfill and recycling would have claimed most of em by now. Such a shame really.
Thanks again!
