the application note for the pcm63 shows pins 5 and 6 bridged - no indication that it is a cap or resistor, etc - can the pins simply be bridged w/ copper wire?

If the original design has 5 & 6 bridged, then it should be bridged on the stacked chip. Copper wire is fine.

Has anyone tried this mod with PCM56's? Can it be done the same way, do you think?

Hi ,i stacked two PCM 56 with a 720 ohms common I/V resistor , without any major problem and a good result .
Later I implemented a common MSB adjustment circuit (except the 470k on trim 15) .
Maybe it's not an ideal solution , but it workx quite well .

pin1 to -V supply via own independent capacitor.
pin3 and 4, via own independent capacitor
