You make me busy
Not only with electronics book, but also with Oxford dictionary
I have a D1 and X2 (later version).
When using balanced interconnects into my X250.5, the system sounds better without the preamplifier in the way. There is plenty of gain.
When driving unbalanced gear as in my headphone amplifier, it sounds best using the X2 to convert to unbalanced on the tape outputs. Go figure...

I haven't really tested this. I rarely go over 12 o'clock with the D1 straight into the X250.5, it's way too loud! The output level is adjustable using a 24-position switch that operates as a differential shunt between the two polarities of the I/V D/A converter. When using the D1 without a preamplifier, it is recommended that the level be set to at least the 11 o'clock position, as there is approximately an 1/2 dB rolloff in the upper frequencies at the lower settings.
