I want to use a printer port with “8 outputs and ~4 inputs” to be wired up onto my Ethernet cable, no hardware, only software would be needed I think, I have a parallel linking cable and the speed is 4Mbps linking speed, so if that connection is 4Mbps, then its ok for me, it’s a old pc.

Here's an article for starters. As far as I know the Realtek ethernet controller or equivalent is a requirement ie. you cannot gererate the required (electrical) signals from a parallel port.
