There is nothing you can do to cancel the bass inside your house that will be terribly effective. Possibly you could create an insulated room inside your existing room and get enough attenuation - but why bother?
The advice to talk to him is good.
Depending on the specifics of the physical location, your proximity to his home and how nasty you want to get you can:
A) hire some punk bands to set up in your yard, aimed at his house early in the morning on weekends
B) check to see if there is a noise ordinance, and bring the cops down on him
C) go the politically correct route and approach him with a phone call, in person chat or letter from your lawyer threatening a law suit due to his infringing upon your right to "peaceful enjoyment of your domicile" (for real)
D) Build a rather large bass horn - aim it at his house, and play polka music or marching music.
E) hire a some guys named Nunzio and "Big Larry" to chat with him about the dents in his car...
The noise canceling headphones might be the best bet short term...

The best method would be to go over to his house and listen to his music there and complement him on the sound.
Then invite him over to your house to see how 'powerful' it sounds there. Give him a beer too ! Once he hears it he might get the idea. Right now he probably doesn't have any idea how irritating it can be.

A simple approach should work well. No need for any violence as that would lead to additional violence and more trouble.
Besides that you must consider that the neighbor has no idea how it sounds in the neighboring house unless he hears it himself ! So let him hear for himself and hopefully come up with a solution.
