The paper was interesting, they said input frequency is doubled at the output, which made me think "rectifier" - then they explain the mechanism as thermoacoustic, which explains the rectifying behavior. I peruse the link that dave provided and sreten is slamming it as a half wave rectifier - well, it is a full wave rectifier if it produces pressure in response to heating - the carbon film heats up no matter which way the electrons go....

Their workaround for the rectification is to run it with a DC bias so that it never rectifies. This is a waste of power and your bias has to be greater than the highest signal you will use. I am not sure how much power it would be wasting as they don't talk input impedance, AFAIR. One wonders what the efficiency is.

Not exactly flat frequency response, either.
