no, the motor didn't have shorted windings, or it never would have worked.
it may very well now though, but it never got hot.
the esc measures the back emf from the windings as the motor turns, if a winding is shorted, the motor won't rotate as the esc can't detect this.

anyone who's interested, the speed controlled died
it was actually after I changed the gearing, which reduced temperatures.
one issues with the speed controllers in larger RC vehicles, is that when you hit the brakes, it generates spikes which go back to the esc... if the esc isn't designed very well, it often kill them
