I don't think his book is that excellent at all. I would refer to it as amplifiers for dummies. 
Can of worms
I think you need to consider the changes at every level since 20 years ago with Self's first edition. We now have individual capacity to investigate electronics in ways that once eluded even professionals.
Cordell writes with a recent, forum driven agenda that naturally agrees with his followers here whist Self is apparently addressing small scale audio manufacturers' needs that had to be met with the greatest economy.
They are bound to appeal differently by content and value to DIYs who will prefer things served up in their own familiar terms. Both authors use "one-trick" topologies of necessity and I don't think either book attempts to delve into theory or analysis to meet high level interests.
Bob does, however, offer us the benefit of simulation guidance and models to engage in the modern design process as DIYs now aspire.
