Leave the screens on
I guess you either love em or hate em! I have two sets I picked up (both for 18 USD (equivalent) a pair!). And I replaced the woofers and re-capped and replaced the binding posts in one set. Sounds great to me!
The secret to my ears is that you need to keep the original mesh screens on.
I use mine in a tiny room (at the bench) at head height.
