Inititally, yes, I think it's best to go with the cheap option (assuming we can find suitable surrounds)
You should be able to find a replacement surround.... somewhere
I've never actually replaced a surround myself(with a new one anyway) but I've taken apart alot of speakers, and it is a rather tedious process. I think you should be able to do it just fine though. Just make sure you have proper glue, and correctly align the voice coil.
