I added some caps to my preamp some time ago and had a similar problem.
While putting things all back together a lead was inadvertently bent over and ended up almost touching the chassis.

Tapping the chassis or tubes caused the lead to momentarily contact the chassis and produce a thump through the speakers.
When the lead was moved clear of the chassis the problem disappeared.

Cheers,

Alex

Hmmm, very interesting Alex!

I'll go into the unit and check on the wiring. As I said previously, I did move some wires around to gain access to the tube sockets, so perhaps that's where the issue lies.

Thanks to all who have helped me with this!
