WoW, that has several sound types nailed down really well, a very impressive collection.

OK, since you asked, one thing that might be a good variation would be a classic Fender "Tweed" sound. That sound is epitomised with the 5E3 Deluxe or 5F1 Champ.

The Champ is a 5-6 watt SE amp withan 8" speaker (I used a 10" in mine) and is the amp used by Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top in the studio on a lot of his early classic cuts ( La Grange). It is reported that Neil Young also has used a Champ or Deluxe in the studio on several of his works.

The 5E3 Deluxe is a PP 2 x 6v6 amp cranking about 12 watts and has no Neg Feedback loop which gives it the "Gritty or Crusty" Tweed tone.

Both of these amps are fairly easy to build and the cost is lower than a 5F6 or 5E7 build. I would build them as a combo for easy portability. You can always unplug the speaker out to the speaker in the cabinet, and plug that into a seperate cabinet.

As far as cost and sourcing parts there are a couple of ways to go.

(1) A complete scratch build which means drilling and punching your own chassis, making your turret or eyelet circuit board, sourcing all your own parts etc. As well as building the enclosure. This is how I build.

(2) A good KIT amp. There are a number of vendors now that offer all kinds of kit amps. Everything from a simple 1 or 2 watt basic amp to Fenders, Marshalls, Vox, and so on. Prices vary according to how much the kit has to offer as well as the complexity of the circuit. Some kits come complete with a speaker and enclosure, a high quality pre-punched chassis and so forth.

I have a pretty good list of kit vendors that I can post here for you if you want and you can research the variety of what is available.

I also have a pretty good list of parts vendors that sell Guitar Amp specific parts and accessories. I can post that too if you need it.

PS: All of schematic heavens Schematics are FREE to download no cost involved.

Looks like a great option... I'm gonna do some research and maybe post some questions (or maybe make a new thread, since it seems to make more sense that way)....

Thanks!

P.S. Any idea how much I might spend on a build of this sort, from scratch vs. kit?

The kit is likely to be 15 to 20 % higher than a complete scratch build. The MAIN reason I scratch build is the challenge of needing to be resourseful and the the various problem solving involved.

A kit is much faster and is less likely to develop problems. Most of the good kit vendors have customer support where you can either post, email or call in a problem question. Most of the kits come with complete step by step instructions. With a scratch, you are totaly on your own.

Here is my list of KIT vendors. I have never used a kit but I have purchased parts from several of these guys.

If you are going to do some research this list might help.
