Great articles! Especially the first one. Answered some of my more technical questions. I think it is interesting though not suprising to see that SACD is outselling DVD-A by a factor of 3.25. That camp has so many more titles available. The main thing I don't understand is: If they really want either format to catch on, why don't they offer us some decent music choices?
Here is a comparison breakdown as I see it:
DVD-A
---------------------------
- where is the freaking music?
+ better overall performance
+ consistent resolution across audio band
- authoring is very complicated
+ authoring software is available though expensive
+ easy to process with DSP or software
- never seen a 192/24 recording anywhere
- many transfers only 48/24, so why bother?
+ just recently playable in a very few computers
- video not necessary, but recommended for navigation
- designed by commitee, aka a cluster ******
SACD
----------------------------
+ better but still incredibly poor variety of music
+ better low frequency resolution
- poor high frequency resolution
- much higher digital noise near audio frequencies
+ supposedly easier to author
- no authoring software available
- very difficult to process via DSP or software
- not playable in computers
+ no video needed
+ singular design vision though way too proprietary
In my opinion, there are more than sufficient negatives for both formats to keep them from becoming widespread.
