lowthers?

Hi all, I'm new to the hi efficiency game and could use some advice on the use of lowthers in a bass reflex box. Lowtherspeakers.com sells and has box desighns that look interesting, but do they work?

Apparently not very well. Lowther drive units are really not suited for bass reflex, not to mention they can't cope with large cone movements. Listen before you buy.

Lowthers are for horns....
high efficiency is horns..
the Lowther cabinets are AFAIK mostly horns...??
Here's an example which I find very interesting myself, both technically and aestethically....and there's lots of other...

Luckily, I was into big loudpeakers before I met my wife, so she has learned to appreciate them and furnish with the loudspeakers, not finding a place for them afterwards...

I’ve listened to a few Lowthers over the years (PM-2A, PM-7A, PM-6A, DX-3, DX-2, PM-6C) in a variety of cabinets (Medallions, Acousta, 2 flavors of Mauhorns, bass-reflex) and mostly loved what I heard with 1 glaring exception – the bass reflex – which I hated. I came close to jumping into Lowthers (was going to build Medallions) but ultimately heard Altec 604’s and was blown away – lots of the Lowther strengths like high efficiency, SET friendliness and that great point source soundstage but with the added benefit of great bass.

I noticed that you are in Canada so it might be a good idea to talk to the Canadian Lowther distributor to get his thoughts on drivers and cabinets. Scott’s a great guy with lots of experience on implementing these drivers at different price points http://www.lowtherclub.com/. Just my opinion, but I would stay WAY clear of using these in BR enclosures.

Thanks for the advice guys, I'm sensing that a br style box is not the way to go for a lowther driver; also, unless the lowthers contribute an otherworldly listening experience I'm not sure It'll be worth spending 700$ on the drivers alone!
What I'm dealing with is 20 sep watts, and require a speaker that is more sensitive than my current 89db boxes. The single driver foster 208 may be an alternative, so might be an mtm design that's 93db + sensitive, but even then I seem to be stuck using expensive focal drivers (90$ a crack) In any case, I think it's better to build then to buy new.

Lowther loudspeakers are really for life. I've been using PM6C's for the past 20 yrs in acousta cases, with Sugden 10w class A amp. I've heard little to beat them on Classical music. If you're into pop with electronic sounds, then perhaps no. They don't have thumping bass, but the orchestral instruments sound as they do live. I spend a good deal of time recording orchestras, and chamber music, and it's always very revealing to bring the CD's home to listen to.
I've now upgraded to EX4 units with the Sugden, and am building 15W Linsley Hood (1996). Also intend to build TP1 cases for the EX4's. The EX4's are expensive, but revealing. No nasty peaks, just smooth transition from low to high frequencies.
Lowthers excel with low power amps. But use the factory designed cabinets...... Available on CD -rom. Any Canadian should really contact Scott @ Lowther Canada. He's helpful.

i purchased the lowther ex 3 (?) drivers 2 years ago to make this ace design and have not built them yet.

just thought i would share.


i have heard the ace using the decware signatures.

the lowther/ace used a red french fry warming light in place of the phase plug.in each driver (shrink tube around bulb threads) so it could stand/face up/point up

sakura ota cables used with a linn table and graham arm and koetsu cartridge.

sounded very good ( i listen @ low volumes) enough for me.

with country music and female vocals.
