Hi all,
I have been rummaging around in the literature a bit more, what do we think of Lowther DX3 with a 14" or 15" woofer for bass extension? I was Looking at Jbl's and the like. I think I want a low power rating high efficiency speaker old new dosn't matter. 9 watt SE 300b amp driver and will eventually bi-amp.
Any thoughts? any links?
regards

Hi, The Basszilla (above) springs to mind (DX4), rgds, sreten.
thanks sreten,
Thats the stuff, I have seen this idea in open baffle too, However I have a wife and shes not keen, so im thinking maybe have a bass enclosed and the Lowther open. see if i can get away with that.
also I'm not closed to the idea of a smaller driver in the bass any suggestions are welcome.
cheers

3x 12" pr side
one pairs clamshell mounted in closed box
crossed active, with Eq
other 12", open dipole
all crossed like a 2.5way
will it work ? maybe
Hi,
Personally I'm no Lowther fan, but for an 8" FR IMO you need a 15" bass.
Though FWIW the Seas :
http://seas.no/images/stories/prestige/pdfdatasheet/H1597-08_FA22RCZ_Datasheet.pdf
http://seas.no/images/stories/prestige/pdfdatasheet/fa22rcz_appnote.pdf
Has far more bass excursion than most 8" FR's.
With the recommended LR filter done at line level is an interesting prospect.
(A LR filter at speaker level is a complete waste of expensive valve watts.)
see Baffle Step Compensation for the basic circuit.
100L tuned to 30Hz looks interesting over the recommended 70L sealed.
A lot wackier and a lot riskier is :

I'd make a corrugated cardboard prototype (use any poly paint / vanish as glue / surface stiffener )
to a) see what it sounds like, b) understand the real issues / possible mistakes, of a proper build.

make it 2, or 3
WCW
A good idea for a Lowther WCW solution. Without the W's the C imposes a premature displacment limit on system performance. Note that the Lowther is a particiular varient of a coaxial driver (C) that uses a mechanical crossover (second compliance) between a whizer cone and an outer LF diaphragm. There are others that incorporate a separate central tweeter that requires its own drive signal. This later varient holds the potential to yield a superior performance.
