How is your potential divider wired? What happens if you turn it right down, does the sub go silent? If not, wire it so it does.

Once you have levels sorted then we can work from there. Did you try moving it around the room yet?

Hello again

Just dropped missus off at work. Potential wired as fixed resistor at the top, variable below(one tag and wiper,other tag NC), have yet to walk the room. Oh, and the pot makes it silent right at the very end of its travel.

Try connecting the NC leg to ground, that should give you better control, with the wiper going to the circuit. Oh, and if it's a log pot, make sure it's connected the right way around.

To add

A quick wander around the room suggests the opposite corner to be ideal. Typical, got wires buried all around the perimeter of the room as it is, her indoors ain't goning to allow me to put it over there. Its next to the left speaker, which is in a corner, but its inbetween both speakers.
