Krell KSA 50 PCB

Parts GB'ers

Sorry to be so direct, but it's time to finish this thing.. So much for a non-profit GB... :)

This is the BOM I had at home and I am now working with.

I will check off the parts I have as I test fit them in both boards again in the AM.

I will then start stuffing them in individual addressed packages.

Tomorrow afternoon I will order the remaining parts to complete the kits with everything EXCEPT output devices.

If this BOM is incorrect, you will get incorrect parts. I have taken this as far as I can, it is now time for YOU to open every link on your perspective board type and verify they are correct. Hit me up privately if you don’t want to post here. stgrab@yahoo.com

Value, voltage and pitch.

Once I place the order Saturday or Sunday night the parts should arrive next week and I can just add the missing parts to the kits and ship out. I will NOT be test fitting these last parts, so I suggest they be inspected thoroughly.

Pics from todays test fitting and last bit of inspecting/cyfering :)

No objections to the parts I had listed on the BOM so I will order them tomorrow.

KSA 50

After studying the schematic a bit it looks like on JANs pcb the FEEDBACK output from the main board is supposed to go to the Speaker +.....is this correct?

1) How are successfull DIYrs accomplishing this, by attaching to the OUTPUT on the output boards or by wiring directly to the + binding post?

2) For DIyrs that have completed the KSA 50, did you use any INductor/resistor combo at the + speaker output? If so how was it constructed? Specifically what size\wattage resistor and inductor?

As allways thanks for the input!

the krells are definitely growing on me, I like the bass and they definitely seem more open and energetic than the Alephs (I hate to compare but they are my reference amp). Definitely both are keepers. Any one here compared the Aleph-X with the krell. Is the X a bit more punchy and bassy than the straigth aleph?
Im thinkin its really time to build the X now, but I could be tempted to build another Krell and biamp:)

I have been comparing the Krell and the A-X for about a week now. No comparison in my book. The Krell is just better sounding to me. Some have said it's the output devices I used in the AlephX and I do plan to change them in the near future. The Krell has much better bass and just an overall more musical feel to it IMO. My A-X only has 16V rails so I don't know how different it would sound if I had used a 16-0-16 VAC transformer. That may have improved the bass response.

I've never heard another Aleph so take that into consideration.

The more I listen to the Krell, the more I understand why folks were willing to pay the dough for them.

I have built one using Jan's boards and TO-3 devices, and one using Al's boards and plastic devices and they are both wonderful sounding.

Blessings, Terry

Krell KSA 50 resistor question

HI
I read so much good info about the Krell clone I desided to I build one.A couple weeks a go I orderd the pcb from rabstq , I hope soone will arive.
I orderd the transistors , I orderd 12 set power transistor MJL21193 / 94 .I will try to matche them as close as posible. I bought some very large heatsinks from Ebay.
Now I would like to order the resistors from Welborne labs .
I found the shematics for the amp at the Delta audio Denmark but I see some resistor value is missing.
I would like to ask for help so I can order all the resistors at the same time.
I live in Toronto Canada and the shipping cost not to cheap to order the resistors . So when I order , I must order all of them one time .
I'm going to use 2X28V 1KVA Transformer , these in case is some resistor value depend from the power supply.
Please forgive me if these was already post somewere but I went over all of the treads and I did't found answer for my question .
I wish everybody Happy Hollidays .
Thanks

Which PCB? Mine or Jan's?

Al,
I think he has me and rabstq mixed up...... He bought your boards.

Jeno,
Your boards are on the way!! You can order the resistors and some of the other parts from Parts Connexion in Oakville Ontario! Why order them anywhere else?Parts Connexion They are just down the road from you.

I have been comparing the Krell and the A-X for about a week now. No comparison in my book. The Krell is just better sounding to me. Some have said it's the output devices I used in the AlephX and I do plan to change them in the near future.

Terry,

I went through the same thing with the Aleph X as you did... I sold off my boards. Unless you are just very curious or have 44 to burn don't waster your time.... build a pair of Aleph 2's if you want a really good Aleph. You certainly have plenty of experience building amps to build a pair of them. I personally will wait till the real Aleph X is offered by the master himself...... then I will build a pair. The Aleph 2's and Aleph 3 are all far superior to the present incarnation of the X...at least by my ears. I don't think it was your OP devices at any rate. From what I've been told this is no where near to what a real X Amp is.

Hi Mark,

are you sure about this? I can vaguely remember Nelson commenting that the DIY version was very close to production. And isnt the general topology more important than the details?
Got me worried now cos this was going to be my next project, maybe I should make my Leach.

Thanks for clearing that up!.. I have one set of PCB's here and they were bought by a local to be delivered with his parts.

ALL GB'ers!

I just finished the orders for the clean up. It took 4 separate groups of items since there are several differences between Al and Jan's boards.

I just have to order Jan's Jap transistors and I'm done. They are available @ MCM and in stock(Thanks Gregory!) and I already have an account there.. :)

Ok I will jot down the differences here while they are fresh then add them to the wiki.

***Fix the traces on your Jan board before you start!!!***

It makes reviewing easier if the leads of the resistors are bend with the value facing up. In other words mount the resistors "value up" so you can check the value later since there are no bands. You should be able to read something like "3321F(3.3K), 1501F(1.5K) or 9101F(9.1K)" or such. I will list the dale values and part numbers on the wiki.

All Jan's "box" caps are 5mm pitch. (THANKS Jan!)
Al's are 3 different sizes.

**Carefully!** Jan's resistors bend right at the body and look nice
Good luck bending the leads for Al's uniformly to "look" good.

As you can see I'm picking on Al, but in reality both boards are just as easy to assemble, but Al's is harder to order for. I will add my BOM to the Wiki, which fixes the mistakes in his.

On both boards mount the components in the following order for the most ease.
1. Diodes
2. Resistors
3. Pots
4. Small caps
5. Large Elctylc caps
then the more delicate transistors.

Lastly, GeWa, thanks a MILLION for having the Wiki URL in your signature as I used it as a reference every time I worked on this from a different PC!

That's enough for this weekend. I spent the last two days going over these orders again. Fortunately, because I found SEVERAL things (that wouldn't work) in the BOM I posted t and asked everyone to review!..

Quick question to those with a working amp, did you use all "exact spec" parts, or did you change some to "close enough"?

Jan's Japaneese transistors ordered.

All should be in this week.

As you can see this was / IS a non-profit GB. I belive in transparency when claiming non-profit.. Unlike the suposed charity non-profit organizations that pay salaries of 6 figures. :D

Excuse my digression.

Anyway, I also ordered a few more sets since I was ordering.

I will see what I have left after I take out my 2, Al's 2, Marks 2 and Pavel's 2. If any, they will be available for sale.

If your in a hurry you are welcome to use the BOM I will add to the wiki and order your own. If you can hold off for another 30 days all the kits will be out and we will see if ther are any issues.
