Karlsonator

Hi X - - do you think something cool could be made from the woofers I already own? (there must be more than a dozen 15s in my pile) - there's vintage 416A; 421A/421LF - for newer woofers with none or only an hour of use I've got the following - Fs is higher than that nice Eminence.

I have one neo magnet 15" Peavey (discontinued and difficult to find at this point - its rather "mellow" - less HF peak than EV15B/L - maybe from the 4" coil - moving mas is low)

For something small, I think the single 12 pym1298/Kappa12a XKi suggested a few months ago with 50L rear and 12.5L front would be pretty punchy:

- don't know how realistic these sims may be but here's a B&C15pzb40 in TB46's 74 liter Karlflex vs an EV15L in Acoustic Control's 115BK. 115BK is nice little kabinet.

a double 12" XKi might be pretty powerful - the sim from awhile ago suggested 100 liter rear and 25 liter front for pym1298/kappa12a. I've love a good 10 XKI or double XKi with less bulk than the 125 liter airspace 2Xpym1298.

a double K-tube on top would lessen thermal compression - a 211 bulb based (4 in parallel for 4 ohms) light bub limiter is still a good idea

Karlsonator 12 is a nice home for Beta 12LTA - I currently have it topped with a Selenium ST320 slot tweeter, 1.1uF (might tweak) a nearby 0.2mH shunt coil and ~5.3 ohms series resistance before the capacitor as attenuation.

its pretty good IMO = if anyone cares.

the stock Karlsonator12 per plan tunes ~37Hz - that seems Ok for moderately-high Qts drivers such as 12LTA and AN10. I think ti would be beneficial for stronger motors to tune somewhat higher - perhaps mid-40s. What would be the most sensible change in the plan to raise tuning?

that's pretty good - is that "each"? - are they Karlsonator 12 per GregB's plan or Karlson 12 "K12"? - (any pictures?) Greg's "Karlsonator 12" is tuned ~37Hz - Karlson K12 are more like 62Hz or so. The slit vent Karlson 12 behaves somewhat different under large signal conditions than a single vent of similar area. The Karlsonator 12 will go about a half octave or more deeper than a K12. A K12 with the right speaker can sound very good and also can substitute for a midbass horn in some instances (provided a strong driver and sufficient power)

I signed in finally - but the picture link isn't working - do you have an image location or working URL ?\

The Karlsonator (12) hasn't been around very long - Karlsons' K12 made its debut in the fall of 1964 and reviewed by Julian Hirsch.

There was a set of Karlson Twelves with Wolverine discussed at AudioKarlma. A Wolverine has rather high Qts so may sound ""bass heavy" -"thick" in a K12. They appear to be the 1954 design aika "Karlsonette" as the eigh inch model had not yet appeared.

if that's real veneer on the wings and cabinet solid, I would give $50 each for the cabinets alone assuming not a lot of veneer damage to the rest of the cabinet. It would cost at least $300 to have a pair built by a cabinet maker.

a Wolverine would be nice open baffle

I think a Karlsonator could be used with some peaking in the midbass.

Lets see what X can do.

The Altec note in the link below shows 755C's response in a 6 cubic foot T-line.

a couple of question for xrk971 - if one wishes to use a Fostex FE206EN in GregB's Karlsonator8, might it be advantageous to tune it a bit higher than the ~41Hz tuning when built to plan? If so, what is the easiest mod to achieve higher tuning? Can it be made adjustable in a way to accomodate 41Hz or a bit higher tuning if needed?
