Looks good. Seems like it would boil down to what the individual has on hand. I already had everything but the mini-toslink cable so it wasn't exactly a big leap for me. Starting from scratch the squeezebox seems like a good solution, and has the benefit of not making one appear to be an apple fanboy.
Just found Squeezeslave 
Run on any small computer and it becomes
a instant slimserver client like the squeezebox. You then synchronize
the two players and whatever you stream from the webpage or
using the remote on the main squeezebox is played on the slave... Nice!
Time for another cheap winterm in the shack and the music follows me

You could of course forget the whole squeezebox and just build or use any old
laptop as a squeezeslave.
