they ain't
the 3876 has a mute, the 3875 hasn't

what if the 3875 is nothing but 3876 permanently unmuted?

it certainly is.
Your first post said no, your second yes.Bricolo said:it certainly is.
It's only a resistor which is probably burnt away in LM3876.

I said: no, they aren't identical (not totally)
and yes, the only difference is certainly the mute circuit
but it may be more that a signel resistor
"If one should sound better, it would be the 3875 (less components in the signal path)"
I can agree with that statement.
I have both chips. I'll build two amplifiers. One with the LM3875 and one with the LM3876.
I'll listen for myself and then measure the performance and report back.

Have built a ESP P19 (3876) and a GC (3875) and while they were implemented quite differently, especially the PS, there was no mistaking they were tonally one in the same.
The 3876 was a little richer in the bottom end due to the PS (I think). The 3875 was much the same though a little lighter in the bottom end, but the bottom end had the same tonal quality, if that makes sense.
If I were forced to choose one it'd probably be the P19, it was a little more foot tapping to me but only because of the above reason. Implementation
