How to remove a piece of conductor from a through hole?

Stainless steel is the magic ingredient in sewing needles. That same magic ingredient is used in these special purpose, low cost, desoldering tools on ebay (link)

Although, in an emergency, you can just use a (sacrificial) resistor's leg to push out the plug. Use needlenose pliers to hold the (hot!!) resistor. If the resistor leg happens to get stuck (soldered) in the component hole, just heat it up and pull it out with the needlenose.

I would recommend a "de-soldering iron" tool. It has a bulb that can suck air up into the tip. You heat the part to liquify the solder and then suck stuff out. Works for when there is a small piece of wire stuck in there, too. Sometimes adding some new solder first and THEN sucking all of it out is a good way to clear the hole.

I noted in one of Papa's articles that he likes old fashion 60/40 solder because it is easier to rework. I used it on a board recently, worked fine.
