Breaking them into a few pieces is going to be more than enough to prevent any "normal" person from reading them with over the counter equipment.
I'm sure the NSA could find a way to read the pieces and extract at least some of the information if they had to though

Yes, it all depends on how hard someone wants to try. A fold or two will stop all but the most determined and skilled. Unless there are state secrets or some treasure involved, no one is going to the trouble for typical backups.
