From what I read, the "sizing" issue wasn't clarified so it is very possible that the improvement was due to the increased capacity of the transformers as opposed to the fact they were separate. Peter Daniel has stated that dual transformers sound better in his gainclone than one but because his amp doesn't have the current througput demands of an electrical Class A amp his results may not be applicable to the situation being explored here in this thread.
