Hornflower 2-way point source

So this isn't (for a change) an assault for the ultimate reproduction quality (all mine failed so far :)) but I hope for maybe at least one or two extraordinary sound properties and a look that befits a small but cool penthouse flat.

It will try to be a point source but has no prospect of having linear directivity - it wont. The aim is for it to be really high resolving and low distorsion (if not pushed) - SPL to reach 70/90 dB (crest/peak).

Due to space constraints it need to occupy little floor space and rest close to wall. Most often only one person will consume music via the Hornflowers.

At the time for this post, I'm half way the build. The complete receipt looks like:

Hornflower (per side)
  • ST260-30 waveguide by member mabat and his ATH software (printed by JLCPCB)
  • 18sounds NSD1095N 16ohm CD + 16 ohm resistor for 32 ohm total
  • 4 pcs of SB12PAC25-4
  • 20cm dia paper tubes for casting house foundation pillars
  • flooring boards 8mm
  • metal picture frames
  • bookshelf hangers
  • glue, concrete-clay, paint etc
  • Active XO (1600?) DSP EQ
Electronics
  • Squeezbox Touch
  • Mac mini
  • CamillaDSP
  • RME Digiface toslink
  • 2pcs smsl SU-6
  • Anaview str-ams0100-2300 (Topping L30 (HF) was abandoned after a couple of months)
  • (3 pairs in parallel out of four from a cat6 cable for 30 ohm char imp. for HF. - not used)
  • Aiyima A07 TPA3255 / SMPS300R 38V (LF)
  • Some whatever cable for LF :)
Placing
  • On wall

I'll continue with pictures of the build and with measurements as they happen.

The WG is one that mabat let out in the wild for free. This is a version has a larger open angle (30 deg) than the standard. I used that because the 18s is 27 deg. I ordered the prints by sending a .stl file. They printed them in 24 hors and I had them in Sweden 12 days later. They are complete solid prints i.e. I took delivery of 2 pcs of WG. Total cost for 2 was about 150€. Member pelanj very kindly helped me with mounting hole fixing!

Looking a bit more into directivity maybe the fit a XO (1600Hz) isn't that poor after all. If so, pure luck :) - at 30 deg its a 1 dB diff in level... for 45deg its a 4 db diff...

Ignore the 4th order XO line or transport it up to 0 dB...

And those interference patterns that start to creep up at 3,5k should be some >40 dB down...

Mmm, we have to see how it pans out. Its not a PA rig :) but if they would sound better than anticipated so the hassle would be worth it, I do have two subs with two 8" (mechanically coupled) in each that I can add. Also pretty cool looking...

I'm hoping for the 8 pcs of 4" ;-) - floor space is precious...

Thanks evo I have a bigger room at the country house to freak out in :)

Stands came out of the moulds. Looks perfectly steampunk :) I also get Star Wars vibes which I love... Will give them a cleaning with a coarse brush. I might add a coat of varnish to keep them in a little darker shade than the bright gray of dry concrete. Here just sprayed with water. Happy :)
