Good advice from Andrew.....otherwise you will burn your variac if you want to get full power at low voltages. Such aditional transfoormer will allow you to get more of current at low voltages. The power is same....Believe, it is really easy to burn thin variac wire.....and it is just stupid not to have some more amps....for an example at 12volts...
