You cannot ( = should not ) put simple batteries in parallel!
They are never exactly the same voltage and one will discharge the other.
A diode or small R in series with each is required. Maybe you knew that ....

how about using 4 X 9V per channel, with each having its own regulator?
and LED in series with each B+?

Yes, this has been creeping around in the back of my brain, I found so many examples of people doing it that I had sort of assumed I'd get away with it, after the warning's here I'll go with a bank of 4 for each side, it's the easyest change to make, the circuits have already been made with seperate 317 Regs,
Nearly done, I would have had it finished by now but a new guitar arrived at lunch time and I got all distarcted!
Pretty much done and sounding sweet, I'm proud of this one, all the components are matched as close as my meters will go, one of the regulator circuits is playing silly with me but both amplifier circuits worked perfectly first time;
Sods Law, after all the messing I snapped the legs of the LED getting the Tag boards in!
