There's a thread over on AK, you might be interested in, sort of along the lines of your start to this thread...

It's a DIY project utilizing an inexpensive JBL waveguide, with an also inexpensive compression tweeter. there are a couple of crossover variations so that you can " roll your own" on the woofer.

Some have marveled at the serendipity of the whole thing, commenting that the several combo's of drivers tried sound " stupid good ".

Might this be along the line of what you seek?

I bought the Econowaveguide, and also I have a JBL 15" and JBL cabinet to fit the econowaveguide , I drive both of them via DCX2496, sounds terrific and cheap as well.
