Guess this mystery woofer!!!

Hi guys,

I saw a pair of these from an electronics surplus store recently and decided to buy them as they might be good stuff. They were real cheap too. Here's what i know or guessed.

310mm Diameter
Die cast Basket
15-20mm max excursion
13lbs overall weight
2" voice coil
Ported pole piece with some cheesy wire grid covering port
Approx 3yrs NOS so probably not chinese or taiwanese.

I was hoping u guys might recognise it, if not, no biggie. Always wanted to try open baffle bass like the H shaped enclosure Linkwitz designed.

If you have a multimeter or can borrow one, can you tell us the DC resistance of the voice coil? Might indicate if this a home sub or a car sub. 2.5 to 3.5 ohms would mean a 4 ohm woofer which could poosibly mean a car sub.

No its not a jaycar driver as i got it from Singapore.

I did measure the resistance before, its about 3.7 or so meaning 4ohm. I thought it looks too decent to be a car sub since its got no pretty colours or decorated dustcap...

where did you get it?

it looks like a kef bass driver. one from the early 1990`s

Hi guys,

I wanted to do a physical measurement of the driver and referred to Madisound's NHT page to see what needs measuring. To my surprise its very very similar to that woofer! This woofer tho doesn't not have a curved cone and has a foam piece stuck on the cone where the voice coil wires might hit the cone...

Now i just need to see a picture of the back of the woofer just to confirm.

Even if its not, at least i know its from the OEM of NHT1259s...

I'm obliged by seller not to say. Anyway he also told me it's the last pair of NOS and he'll never be bringing in anything similar again.

THE NHT driver was / is made to NHT specifications by Tonegen.

Tonegen have definetely made drivers for KEF in the past.

Can't find any info on Tonegen.

Similar construction techniques that Pioneer uses on their car woofers. Can't wait to see your OB woofers when they're done...err, or listen to them if that's possible.
