The high end resistors such as Vishay, Caddock, Audionote tantalum, and those carbon film ones Peter uses, are more in the $6-10 range EACH. Let me tell you, they add up to big bucks pretty fast! But if you keep your eyes open, you can find some deals. I was jumping for joy when I got a bunch of Vishays for "only" $2 ea from the guy on our Trading post, and there's that Nebraska surplus place that also has resistor deals. each that's I guess that's another topic.
