For Sale: Custom-kit-built high-efficiency (~97 dB sensitivity) speaker system, circa 1960. This would have been DIY-speaker-building, as of the late-1950s or early-1960s.
Uses JBL C-36-type cabinet (2.65 cubic feet vented enclosure), loaded with a Goodmans Axiom 301 wide-range 12" driver, an ElectroVoice T-35 horn tweeter, and an Electrovoice X-36 3.5KHz crossover network (pre-built, in metal can). All drivers work properly; Goodmans Axiom 301s have been reconed while the EV stuff is all factory-original. Looks like the system originally would have had the Goodmans 12" driver running full-range, then had the EV tweeter and crossover added at a later point.
This speaker system is uniquely well suited for small tube amps... it's a genuine near-97-dB sensitivity, and is a 16 ohm load. My best luck, has been running it with a Magnavox AMP-185, PP6V6, approximately 12w/ch tube amp... it really makes the most of the power available, with good bass control and very good midrange resolution.
Doesn't sound like a "vintage speaker"... it actually, with the exception of a little "primitive" high end (due to the old EV tweeter), sounds quite "modern" in its relative "flatness" in the midrange/midbass/bass... it's not peaky or harsh AT ALL. Very well behaved speaker, surprisingly so!
The cabinets on these, are a rosewood finish- the veneer isn't perfect (there are some chips and splinters around some corners and edges), but it's a pretty darn nice looking cabinet, all considered.
Selling for $400 for the pair, plus shipping.
If interested, please contact me by email ( gwaters@postmaster.co.uk ) or PM (GordonW).
Thanks...

Gordon.
