★★ Free PCB for JLH 2005 Class-A Amplifier

I have bought 6 or 7 pairs of these cards now. All so far have worked fine, but I have used my own transistors and capacitors. Not only are most of the output transistors that I've gotten with these kits fake, I've also received fake capacitors. (the 2 large ones for each board). I opened one, and inside, there was a lot smaller one.

This socks, , but the cards are nice. :)

Hi
Im kind of sad to post this.
My amps are now working perfect.
I chose to replace EVERY transistor! Didn't trust them (see att.).What a bore!
The pic. is one of the delivered "MJ15003",in undressed condition.
(No porn!,more like opening a poor grave)

Heres a link you should see to compare the "innerguts"
Counterfeit Transistors

Jane?

Just curious, where did you buy the components? Are they part of the kits that you bought from the vendor? You should ask for replacement since those components are not genuine.

Regards,

Hello Shamron,
Thanks for your feeback first. I just open one big capacitors( 6800uf) and i did not find the smaller one as you said. As this capacitors are all purchase from vendor and from now on we find no problem. Could you pls send the image smaller one to me to check? And you said all transistors you changed. Really MJ15003 have some problem and have customer told us. So we discard all bad MJ15003 now. Anyway sorry for this fault.

Hi Siliconray. :)

I threw the capacitor a while back, but I still got a set or two from the same batch, and know I still got at least one of the capacitors I speak of. I will open it and out a pic when I get home.
I used my own transistors for two reasons. The mj15003s because they looked dodgy and not like the 50 ones I bought from Farnell. And the other ones simply because matched them my selves, not because I think the smaller ones were fake or dodgy. I don't. :)

When that is said, I love the pcb's and I am very grateful that you make and sell them and all over I am very satisfied with both the product, price and delivery time.

:)

Hi

Jane
I replaced ever transistor simply because I did not thrust the quality.
The MJ15003 and the BD139/140 was fried instantly leaving me no choice.
The BD560 was replaced just for my Comfort.
Nothing else was changed.

BTW;I totally agree with Shamron, really hi quality PCBs.

Shamron
Please include a pic. of the unopened Cap.also.

Hello Jane.

I ordered some boards yesterday but can't view my order on your website as it doesn't recognise my email address when I try to log in? Order #100007930. Please advise.

To build this amplifier will include some sentiment as my home is very close to where John Linsley Hood lived before he passed away and I was fortunate to meet him a couple of times.

Hello Jan,
As you said we now discard all BAD MJ15003 now. But i really do not understand you said why need replace EVERY transistors? Could you pls advise me which transistor have problem need you replace. So we can check the component in stock. Thanks
Jane
For info I purchased 2 kits.
On tightening the first MJ15003 the top 'popped' off. So I replaced it with one from the second (unassembled) board. Powering up I couldn't get the 0V down to a few mv (it was hovering around -22V). Checked the Mj15003 and one was blown so I replaced it with one from my stock (ex Farnel) at which point the third (ex kit) Mj15003 blew.
Now have both MJ15003 ex Farnell running as expected.
Have built board #2 and connected to the same MJ15003's (they're on a temporary heatsink for testing). Working fine (I am using my own 10,000 uF caps for C6/C7)
Seems like the MJ15003's supplied with the kit are a problem.
Kit was purchased last year BTW (I don't always have time for my hobbies).
Other than replace the MJ15003's in the kit a few suggestions:
1. Add the 2K variable VR1 if you're putting in C3 - doing 1/2, 1/2 (i.e. 200R with C3) is confusing. Then add a link for C3 (so both options are available) - and add appropriate note in instructions.
2. Might be an idea to move the connection for Q1/Q2 to the end of the board (next to the speaker connection)? having O/P connections on opposite sides of the board is a bit strange considering the trannys will mostly be on a single heatsink.
3. Maybe move the speaker output to one side for easier connection? Mirror image boards would be nice so the output 'points to the speaker connections'
4. Perhaps design the boards such that 1/2 watt resistors can be used throughout for those using their own components? (I keep stocks of 1/2 watt resistors in most sizes rather than duplicate 1/4 and 1/2 not sure how 'common' this is?)
5. Review the hole sizes as some seem a little on the large size (like C6/C7).

Anyway, I'm nit-picking above I guess.

Board quality is very nice. Thanks :)

Will let you know when I've put it all in a case, powered up and done some listening.

Snap on both counts as I could never get the website to recognise my email address after I set it up and ordered. My boards, ordered a couple of months ago, are for exactly the same reason as I used to live in Greenway, just a short walk from "Robins" and was a frequent visitor there; my mother still lives there. There are also un-built as they are behind my second original 10W design (the first, now lost being shortly before the WW article was published). Now I suppose that must wait for testing the MJ15003s that came with it.

Hi
Heres a quick test:A piece of cloth/paper with alchohol/acetone,try to wipe off the text.
If its stays on there proberly ok,if not they are without doubt fakes.
The print "MEXICO" also indicates a fake, originals : "MEX".
Anyone out there with a working amp. willing to try this easy test?

Now isn't that a coincidence! I live in North Taunton and cycled out to Monkton Heathfield a number of times.

They don't make them like JLH anymore do they. My abiding memory of visiting him was his lighting of a log/coal fire; he used what can only be described as a flame thrower that he had connected directly to a gas fire outlet that was next to the fireplace.

I have seen adverts for retail/commercial stoves that have an integrated gas fired starter.

It certainly works (being an ex "almost" gas man).

There are gas hob lighters that have a small liguified gas supply (lighter fluid) that is "lit" with a piezo discharge.

Where I grew up in the Midlands the semi detached we lived in had a gas fired poker to start the coal fire.
The 'boiler' was in the chimney above the fireplace in the lounge thus the coal fire had to be lit if one wanted hot water anywhere in the house.
The (single) bathroom had an 'L' shaped gas pipe on a bracket that had to be lit as it was the only source of light in the bathroom - good days, though we didn't bath much ....

Capacitors included with JLH Kit

Hi again, sorry for taking so long.

Here are the pics of the capacitors. Also, the 2n3055 are included. It's base is more than 2,5mm thick and far from flat, so i'm pretty sure that's a fake as well.

Anyways, the pcb's are nice though. :)

Hi
Just a few pics. to confirm Shamrons suspicion.
Left : origional,rigth : fake.
Notice the text before and after the quick test.See post#154
I made the marking on the back of the fake, thinking I was connecting it wrong.Just Waisting time, money and effort.

Jan

Isn't it a nice world?
