Update and Final Result
I gave the player to a family friend who repairs electronic goods like these, rather than waste my time. He replaced the laser unit which made no change. The PSU which can go was checked out as fine.
The culprit was found to be one of the boards. We got a damaged player from eBay to get the board from, but that had the same fault! In the end we put an identical Philips board in and changed the Marantz control chip for the Philips one (to get the extra setup features) and all is now fine.
