From what I see in datasheet LC78622 is a better chip as entire display system control is ensured by a separate chip, while LC78601 and LC78602 are all in one chips.
An LC78622 implementation for the same CD mechanics:
http://vicol-audio.ro/docs/sanyo_mcd-zx700_sm.pdf
IMHO this could be a better transport, but I will stick to original shiga due cost-wise.

Tibi
Maybe we should consider using what-ever chip that is widely available or still in production.

LC78601 - LCD display
LC78692 - LED display
LC78620 - no system display
LC78622 - no system display
So far we source them as per below:
LC78601RE-8615 SANYO 100PCS N/A QFP $1.50
LC78602RE-8616 SANYO 100PCS N/A QFP-64 $1.50
LC78622NE SANYO 100PCS N/A QFP-64 $1.50
This is to confirm that the project will use LA9242M/LC78601RE cipset exactly like in JVC RC-EZ31

I am interested regardless but I have a question. Is it there any way that we can get track info incorporated in this design or is this something that is beyond the capabilities of this chip?

LC78601 chip is not capable to give track detailed info.

Here is a little ad.
Found several boombox CD mechanism. No display, no remote and no keypad.
Just CD laser head and controller PCB.
$20 for one. Used.
I could replace it with new CD head and it would be $30 for one CD mechanism.
Send me PM if you are interested.
