This amp design is crying out for some decent compensation design.
Problem was, ~40 years ago there was no LTSpice or any other readily available simulators. I think compensation design in those days was for all but a few very knowledgeable practitioners, a black art. You certainly would not comp an amp like that today. Some of the old JLH and Elektor designs also look decidedly pedestrian by todays standards in this regard.
